I did some work on the ‘Vette and removed the smog pump pulley, replaced the belt with a 95’ serpentine and put it all back together with he smog pump out of the loop.
Dammit! The rattle is still there!
I was reading some blogs that suggested this method over pulling the pump and adding a $120 bracket to use the original belt. Right? Much better idea. So when it has to pass emissions in 5 years, put the pulley and original belt back on – no harm no foul!
But I need to find out where this rattle is, It is somewhere in the belt system. I guess I am going start with the cheapest and work my way up, here is the order: Idler pully bearing, power steering pump, water pump, alternator, AC Compressor.
One of those &%$#@#@!!*’s is the culprit, and it is impossible to narrow down and be sure which one.
I do not think it is the alternator or AC compressor, they both look new and work fine so I am thinking one of the first three.
